Quaint Inns and Pubs

At the heart of British social life, you can find inns and pubs ranging from the medieval period with their timber framing, thatched roofs and thick stone walls, Georgian ones with elegant symmetry and large windows, Victorian ones with intricate tiles, stained glass and ornate metal and woodwork and even quirky modern styles. I love painting these magical buildings that come to life in the evenings with their lights, colour and laughter.

The Prospect of Whitby

London’s oldest riverside inn, established in 1520, renowned for its rich maritime history, famous patrons, and scenic views sits near the historic Execution Dock, where pirates and smugglers were hanged. I felt like I was taken back in time as I sketched this lovely building one autumn evening.

The Moby Dick

I wanted to try and paint the cheerful and inviting glass panelled conservatory of this modern pub that overlooks Greenland Dock. This quiet area which was once a part of the London timber docks and the whaling industry is now a haven for kayakers, windsurfers and canoers who you can watch on a sunny weekend from the shaded benches outside.

The Salt Quay (Riverside view)

With it’s breath-taking riverside views of the city’s modern skyline, old warehouses and historical docks where you can hear the waves of the Thames lapping on the embankment, the Salt Quay has one of the best riverside locations in London. I loved to capture the curving perspective of the Thames walk by the rear garden which is a great place to enjoy a warm, lazy afternoon and watch the boats with waving tourists pass by.

A delightful warehouse conversion with a wooden facade, grand terrace and splendid rear gardens, this endearing pub stands as one of London's most charming riverside haunts. I loved painting the contrast of the red brick walls, grey wood panels surrounded by light green trees on a spring day.

The Coach and Horses

It was an absolute joy to paint a night scene of this fairy tale like Tudor building from the 1700s. One of the best preserved and oldest in the locality, the Coach and Horses features stained glass windows, rustic beams, and rich wood panelling.

The Mayflower

Dating back to the 1500s, this enchanting little pub overlooks the very spot in which the iconic Mayflower ship was moored before setting sail towards the New World. It was a sheer joy to capture the whitewashed building, bursting flower baskets, stained glass and gorgeous metal lamps that light up the cobbled street.
