Endearing Poona

A journey down Nostalgia Lane takes me back many years to the quiet, leafy Poona, where I spent a happy childhood with friends and loved ones. This endearing city has changed a lot but still has preserved many of it's old world cafes, restaurants, cinemas, colleges and historical places that I fondly remember.

I have tried to capture the period features like the beams, tiles and lamps of the ubiquitous terrace of the Marz-O-Rin cafe with imaginative colours.

A truly iconic and a unique cafe on the Main street that is still more or less unchanged. I remember buying lots of picnic food like sandwiches, rolls, cakes and cold coffee from this little corner building with the bright red and white awnings.

One of the city's last surviving single-screen cinemas, this beautiful blue bordered yellow building has a rich history right from the black and white era of cinema to modern times. Rumour has it that you might see or hear a ghost even if it is not a horror movie you are watching !
Westend Theatre

The pretty little theatre from the 1930s sadly no longer exists in it's original form. I have used my memory, imagination and a bit of artistic licence to portray it's old world charm.

I relished painting this old cinema hall, which back in the day exclusively presented the latest Hollywood movies, in a wild mix of yellow, pink, turquoise, orange, green and red.

I enjoyed making an interpretation in yellow and pink of this charming art deco building that sadly no longer exists but once regaled its whistle-blowing audience with Bollywood films.

Nestled in the leafy suburb of Prabhat Road, this truly delightful cafe offers delicious 'western' snacks. A place where we celebrated many joyful birthdays with friends and now where my painting is graciously displayed by the owners.

A favourite haunt of college students, this Udipi style restaurant has a lovely garden that offered a welcome respite in the heat of the city.

Founded in 1935 this is a perennially busy Irani cafe in the Deccan Gymkhana area. Hot spicy tea, buttered buns and blaring radio music best enjoyed on a Sunday morning.
